On 22nd May 2016, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the nation in 20th Edition of Mann ki Baat programme of All India Radio (AIR). In this programme, PM Modi considered and discussed various issues of the people. According to him, it is an amazing opportunity to interact and connect with the people through this mode.

In “Mann Ki Baat”, PM Modi informed that AIP has become successful to broadcast this programme in regional languages and now people can listen to this program in their own language. He was thankful to the people who have suggested their ideas through “NarendraModiApp” or through letters, telephone calls, and website. The suggestions for ‘the active government in terms of public service’ and ‘priority basis for the public welfare activities’ are valuable. He urged the people to become more active and participate in these type of activities. With your active participation, we can bring a great change in our system.

He talked about the environmental degradation, delay in monsoon, continuous increase in temperature and water scarcity and drought situation. He said that we should take the initiative to protect the forests and wildlife to maintain a balance between human life and nature. He stated that the World Environment Day will be celebrated on 5th June and UN has given the theme “Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade” where they will discuss various issues of wildlife and nature. He said that we should also focus on saving flora and fauna, water and forest expansion.  We should neglect the carelessness all around us as it can cause great damage to our environment. He talked about the forest fires that raged in the lap of the Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.


He said that water scarcity and drought situation has become a major issue these days. The states that have been suffering due to this condition are Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. He mentioned about the high-level meeting with the CMs of these states where he reviewed the actual condition of the regions and districts. He asked the state government to take initiative for water conservation, water bodies and structures so that people in drought-affected areas can get an immediate help. He also mentioned the efforts of the states who have tackled this situation wisely by implementing the plans to conserve water for the future use like dams, farm ponds, water bodies etc. He said that it has become important to find out the permanent solution with the best practices and schemes. For that, he told the Niti Aayog that they should work on how to incorporate the best practices across all the states.

He mentioned about the use of technology to mitigate the drought in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. He said that we should work on drought management for water conservation to save a single drop of water. Considering ‘Per Drop, More Crop, he focused on Drip Irrigation and Micro Irrigation methods that can help to cultivate crops like rice and paddy. Many states have become successful to employ these schemes for the crop production like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. In Telangana, farmers have made a commendable effort with “Mission Bhagirathi” to optimally use the water of Godavari and Krishna rivers.

In Andhra Pradesh, ‘Neeru Pragati Mission’ has been using technology for the groundwater recharging. In Maharashtra, ‘Jal Yukt Shivir’ is the best movement that has provided great help in saving the state from water crisis in future. The schemes like ‘Lok Suraj, Jal Suraj’ in Chhattisgarh, ‘Balram Talaab Yojana’ and ‘Kapil Dhara Koop Yojana’ in MP have been started for water conservation. In Uttar Pradesh, there is ‘Mukhya Mantri Jal Bachao Abhiyaan’. In Karnataka water conservation efforts are in the form of ‘Kalyani Yojana’, under which they are trying to revive wells once again. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, there are many ancient bodies – deep tanks or masonry walls with steps going down to the water. In Rajasthan, CM’s Jal Swawalamban Abhiyan – Water Self Sufficiency Campaign has been initiated and they have also launched a big campaign for building ‘Check Dams’. He asked the people to save water in June, July, August, and September this year.

PM Modi addressed the countrymen to build Transparent India, Modern India. He talked about Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) that has led to a cashless society. Moreover, with every Jan Dhan account, RuPay Card has been provided to the account holders that will provide debit and credit benefits to the users. He said the nowadays a very small instrument has come which is called ‘Point of Sale’- P. O. S. – ‘Pos’. With the help of that, users can easily pay money or payment. With this, there is no need to carry cash along with, as you can make the payment directly with the card. The second endeavor of the Indian Government is Bank of Mobile. The ‘Universal Payment Interface’ banking transaction- UPI has changed the vision of people as now they can easily transaction with the mobile phones.

He talked about the Olympic Games and mentioned that the players should train themselves to face all types of challenges, only then they can become successful to represent our nation in the sports. He was thankful to Sports Minister Shri Sarbanand Sonowal who reached Patiala in Punjab to check out the training session of players, facilities and arrangement for them like food, sports amenities, work session, training machines etc. He praised the suggestions of people for a football game. He mentioned about the exam result of 10th and 12th students where girls have marched ahead triumphantly. He congratulated the students and asked them to move ahead with the confidence. He asked the parents to give freedom of mind and thoughts to the students so that they can enjoy what they have achieved.

He talked about the International Yoga Day which is to be celebrated on 21st June 2016 in Chandigarh. He asked the people to do the regular practice of Yoga to stay healthy and fit. He mentioned the importance of Yoga in our life. He said that people should take 20-25-30 minutes out from their daily routine and spend it on practicing Yoga. He mentioned that people can also visit the website of Government of Yoga to check out the syllabus of asanas. He asked the people to motivate friends, colleagues, family members, and relatives to do Yoga and Pranayama.

In the end, PM Modi said that people can also listen “Mann Ki Baat” by giving a missed call on 1922. By doing so, they can listen to this programme in any language of their choice.
